When starting a company, you don’t begin by hiring a Platform Engineering team. But as your company scales, there will come a time where hiring that team and introducing its practice will make sense.
This talk shares my experience leading an SRE team, scaling from three people running all of the company’s infrastructure to a product-centric Platform Engineering team building tools for 200 other engineers.
I’ll explain the challenges we faced at each stage – problems that are common across engineering orgs – and what steps we took to tackle them. I’ll cover several pragmatic steps you can take before going all-in on internal developer platforms that are cheap, immediately useful, and provide solid foundations should you wish to adopt an Internal Developer Platform (IDP) in future.
